Connectors: Dropbox and X

View as Markdown

Connectors link ChatCut Desktop to accounts you already use. Two are open to Desktop users today: Dropbox, to bring media into a project, and X, to publish a finished export and read how your posts performed.

Which connectors can I use?

  • Dropbox and X, in ChatCut Desktop. These are the only connectors offered to ordinary accounts.
  • Not in the web app. On the web, Dropbox and X are not offered to ordinary accounts.
  • Other services are not available yet. Google Drive, YouTube, TikTok and Instagram are not offered to ordinary accounts.
  • You must be signed in to ChatCut. Connecting needs your ChatCut account first.

How do I connect or disconnect an account?

  1. Open a project and the Agent chat.
  2. In the composer menu, choose Connector, then pick Dropbox or X.
  3. Click Connect Dropbox or Connect X. Your browser opens the provider’s own sign-in and consent page.
  4. Approve access there. ChatCut shows the account as Connected.

Only your click starts the sign-in. The Agent cannot start it for you. If the sign-in times out or you cancel, click Connect again.

To remove an account, open Manage plugins (or the connector’s detail view) and choose Disconnect. For X the button reads Remove account. To add a second account, choose Connect another account. If an account’s access has lapsed, choose Reconnect.

Connecting is not permission to post or upload anything. It only links the account.

How does ChatCut pick the account?

ChatCut never picks a default account for you. If you have several accounts connected, you choose one under Choose an account, or name it in your prompt. The Agent only uses the exact account you named. If the connected account changes mid-task, ChatCut stops and asks you to try again.

Under Agent permissions, you can switch individual connector tools on or off. The setting Allow AI and connected MCP clients to use this account controls whether the Agent and connected MCP clients may use the account at all.

What can ChatCut read from my accounts?

  • Dropbox: read-only. ChatCut asks to read your account info, file names and file contents so it can list and download media you choose. It cannot edit or delete your Dropbox files.
  • X: ChatCut asks to read your posts and profile and to create posts and upload media for them. It uses these to publish a video you approve and to read statistics for your own posts.
  • ChatCut does not show you or the Agent your sign-in credentials.

How do I bring Dropbox media into a project?

  1. Choose Connector, then Dropbox, and pick your account.
  2. Search by file name or browse the list. ChatCut lists audio, video, images, GIFs and SVGs. When there are none, it shows No supported media files in Dropbox.
  3. Select files and click Add to chat. You can add up to 20 files at a time.

Choosing a file attaches a reference to it. ChatCut downloads the original into your project only when the task needs the whole file, for example to read, transcribe or edit it. A reference alone is enough for the Agent to name the file or look at its thumbnail.

Attaching is not the same as importing:

  • Attached reference: a pointer to the Dropbox file at the version you selected. Nothing is copied yet.
  • Imported media: the original file is downloaded into the project’s Media Pool and can go on the timeline. The Agent does this for you when the task needs it. Transcription is skipped unless you ask for it.
  • ChatCut never silently switches to a newer version of the file, or to a different account. If the file changed, select it again.
  • If you attach the same file again, ChatCut reuses the copy already in the project.

What are the file size limits?

MediaLimit
Dropbox audio and videoUp to 1 GiB per file
Dropbox images, GIFs and SVGsUp to 512 MiB per file
X video (MP4)0.5 to 140 seconds, up to 512 MB

How do I publish an export to X?

  1. Export your video as an MP4 from the project.
  2. Connect X, then ask the Agent to publish that export. Include the post text and, if you have several accounts, the account name.
  3. The Agent checks the export and your post text, then opens a review in this project’s Desktop window. It shows the account, the video, the text and the credit cost.
  4. Tick the confirmation: I have reviewed the account, video, post text, and credit cost and want to publish this post to X. Then click Publish to X.
  5. ChatCut uploads the video, creates the post and follows it until it is published. The Agent replies with a link to the live post. You can also click View post on X.

Things to know:

  • You confirm the cost, never the Agent. The Agent cannot approve the credit quote for you. The quote is only valid for a short time. If it expires, ChatCut asks you to review it again.
  • Posts are public. X has no private drafts, so a post from a public account is visible right away. For a protected account, only approved followers see it.
  • Post text is limited to 280 characters.
  • An uncertain result is not retried. If ChatCut cannot tell whether a post went through, it shows Publication status is uncertain. Use Check status or Verify existing post rather than publishing again.

Credits for publishing are charged to your ChatCut balance. See Credits for how credits work.

How do I read statistics for my X posts?

Ask the Agent how your posts are doing. It can read up to 100 of your own posts by ID, or a page of your recent posts.

  • Impressions are how many times a post was shown. This is not the same as video views.
  • Video views are reported separately, for the attached video, when X provides them.
  • A missing number means X did not provide it. It does not mean zero.
  • A handful of posts is a small sample. The Agent should report what it measured and not guess at why a post did or did not spread.

Reading statistics calls the X API and can use credits. See Credits.

The detail view for X also lists your Published videos.

Prompts you can copy

Prompt

Look through my Dropbox for the clip named interview-raw and add it to this project. Skip transcription for now.

Prompt

Publish my latest MP4 export to my connected X account with this text: 'Behind the scenes of our new product launch'.

Prompt

Show impressions and video views for my last five X posts, and tell me which numbers X did not return.

What about privacy?

  • Dropbox files stay in Dropbox until you select them. ChatCut reads only what you choose and imports a file only when your task needs it. Imports go into your local project.
  • Disconnecting removes the link from ChatCut.
  • Publishing sends the video you approve to X. Nothing is uploaded until you confirm the review.

What are the limits and tips?

  • Desktop only. Dropbox and X are for ChatCut Desktop. See ChatCut product facts for how Desktop differs from the web app.
  • Keep the Desktop window open while a post uploads and finishes. The upload screen says to keep the window open.
  • Choose the right project. A Dropbox selection belongs to the project and chat where you made it. If either changes, select the files again.
  • Name your account when you have more than one connected.
